AAII Sentiment Survey

The American Association of Individual Investors Sentiment Survey is conducted weekly. Respondents are asked whether they are bullish, neutral or bearish on the stock market for the next six months. Considered a contrary indicator. Historical subsequent returns when individuals investors are “extremely” bullish or bearish can be found here.

NAAIM Survey of Manager Sentiment

The National Association of Active Investment Manager Sentiment Survey is conducted weekly. Respondents are asked provide a number which represents their overall equity exposure. Responses can vary from -200% (leveraged short) to 200% (leveraged long). Historical subsequent returns when active managers are “extremely” bullish or bearish can be found here.

VIX

Often called the “fear gauge”, the VIX measures the market’s 30 day expectation for volatility on the S&P 500 index. Since its introduction in 1993, VIX has been considered by many to be the world’s premier barometer of investor sentiment and market volatility.
